Katalog obejmuje judaika - stare druki znajdujące się w zbiorach Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej w Krakowie a pochodzące z dawnej Pruskiej Biblioteki Państwowej w Berlinie. Wytłoczono je w różnych ośrodkach drukarskich Europy, Azji i Afryki. Nie posiadają one jednej proweniencji etniczno-religijnej. Wytwarzali je zarówno Żydzi, jak i nie-Żydzi. Mianem "judaika" określone tu zostały druki, które w berlińskim zbiorze stanowiły wydzieloną kolekcję, a wydrukowane zostały czcionkami hebrajskimi w różnych językach, przede wszystkim po hebrajsku, ale też po aramejsku, w jidysz, ladino czy judeoarabsku. Również przynależą do nich druki w innych językach: syryjskim, łacińskim, włoskim, niemieckim, francuskim, hiszpańskim, polskim, portugalskim i angielskim treściowo dotyczące Żydów i judaizmu, w tym antyżydowskie oraz karaimika (dotyczące Karaimów) i palestinika (dotyczące dawnej Palestyny). Zbiór ten stanowią książki wydrukowane od początku XVI do końca XVIII wieku, z ponad stu pięćdziesięcioma wyjątkami ? drukami XIX- i XX-wiecznymi, które z różnych powodów trafiły do tej kolekcji. Łącznie opisanych jednostek katalogowych jest 3407. To jedna z najcenniejszych kolekcji nie tylko w Europie, ale i w świecie. Stanowi cenne źródło do badań bibliologicznych nad książką żydowską i studiów judaistycznych. Niegdyś skrywana, od lat 80. XX wieku mało dostępna, wreszcie przez niniejszy katalog przywrócona nauce i kulturze.

The catalogue comprises Judaica - old prints belonging to the collection of the former Prussian State Library in Berlin which is housed in the Jagiellonian Library. The name Judaica is used to refer to prints which constituted a sub-collection of the Berlin one and were printed in Hebrew fonts mostly in Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish, Ladino, or Judeo-Arabic (Arabic transcribed into Hebrew). The sub-collection also contains prints written in Syriac, Latin, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese and English and related to Jews and Judaism including anti-Jewish (anti-Semitic) prints, Caraimica (related to Caraims) and Palestinica (concerning former Palestine). As the Berlin collection had the status of the National Heritage, the policy of the People?s Republic of Poland did not allow researchers to study the Berlin collection in the years 1947-1980. It was only as late as thirty years ago that the situation started to change gradually to achieve a status quo in which everybody can benefit from the collection according to the rules stipulated in the Jagiellonian Library Regulations for special collections. A separate catalogue in the form of a book was created in order to make the Judaica more available and to promote knowledge about them. It seems impossible to limit the place of their origin to a particular territory. The prints were created in Europe, Asia and Africa and are not attributed to any specific ethnic group nor religious denomination. Among the authors there were Jews as well as non-Jews. Chronologically, the collection consists of old prints excluding incunabula i.e. publications from the early 16th century until late 18th with over 150 exceptions ? 19th and 20th century prints which, for various reasons, became part of this collection. Generally, there are 3.407 catalogued units; many of them are bound together under one cover and catalogue number.
